Smart NC

Project co-financed by the POR FESR Toscana 2014-2020

The project aims to improve the precision and repeatability of machine tool machining operations used in the automotive, aeronautics, and construction industries.

Typical solutions used to control machining accuracy aim to improve the machine's construction design. Unfortunately, these solutions are very expensive and require significant maintenance. Instead, the project aims to achieve this goal by improving the machine's control system. This approach reduces construction and maintenance costs and allows for its application on existing machinery.

The factors that affect precision are not all known. Indeed, the actual response of the mechanics and the workpiece to the stresses imparted by the Numerical Control (CNC) requires the introduction of new sensors and data collection systems synchronous with the CNC input; only recently have technologies suitable for this purpose become available.

This project aims to develop a data collection system capable of correlating CNC input with its effect on machining. Data collection involves the addition of additional measurement sensors.

Data analysis should lead to CNC actions that improve machining accuracy.

The project proposes the use of automation components from various suppliers; furthermore, it places no limits on the type of machine tools that can be worked on.

At the moment the Automation market does not offer a solution with the characteristics indicated.

The ISAC CNC's hardware and software architecture provides an excellent starting point for achieving this goal. Furthermore, the workgroup has the necessary skills for development.

The project includes:

  • The identification of sensors that allow the mechanical response to stresses during processing to be measured;
  • The creation of a data collection system that allows for the correlation of the requested stimulus, the action actually produced, and the result obtained on the piece;
  • The creation of a data processing system aimed at obtaining changes to the technological parameters to be applied to the machining process to improve its precision.

The project's objectives and methods are in line with the national Industry 4.0 directive.
